Dry Mouth

Self-Help Treatment Solutions For You

Dry mouth is uncomfortable and disturbing to an individual. Most of the time, if your mouth is dry, you will find yourself licking your lips -- trying to keep it wet.

Here's what usually happens....

"Xerostomia" or, dryness of the mouth occurs due to a decreased function of the glands that produce saliva. The lip becomes more sensitive to chapping than the skin.

Unlike the skin, the lips do not produce oils to protect them against drying. People get dry lips and mouth when the glands in the mouth that make saliva are not working properly.

There could be several reasons for this to happen:

  1. Side effects from medication.
  2. Medical history such as diabetes.
  3. Salivary glands affected by virus bug.
  4. Stress and nervous tension.
  5. After-effects of locals surgery

A common disease associated for people with dry mouth is Sjögren's syndrome. This syndrome occurs usually due to irritation and swelling of the salivary glands.

The white blood cells in the body will invade the salivary glands and cause it to act up. Somehow, this happens more frequently to women and the elderly than the others.

So what can you do about dry mouth? There are several ways to help prevent and treat dry mouth. Here are a few of them.

Treatment Remedies For Dry Mouth

Gums

Try chewing sugar-free gum. This can help to promote more saliva production by your salivary glands. Suitable for both adults and young children.

Diet

Consume fiber! Try to include more green leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet. The vitamins and minerals from foods can help you to combat dry mouth.

Water

Drink more water. Increase the intake of water can help to stimulate our salivary gland, so try to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.

Medications

Take medications. Pilocarpine and cevimeline are two common medications but they are for very severe cases.

Herbs

Brew Chinese herbs like phiopogois and pinelliae tuber together. Herbal remedies like this can help to improve your salivary glands performance.

Acupuncture

Try traditional acupuncture. This traditional Chinese method can help your blood to circulate and help to improve your salivation.

Alcohol

Watch the alcohol. Alcohol is not only bad for the body, but the mouth as well. Alcohol is very drying and reducing the intake is important.

Mouth Wash

Avoid mouthwash with alcohol ingredients in them. Read the labels.

Caffeine

Steer away from coffee or other caffeine concentrated beverages.

Humidity

Install a humidifier in your living area to improve the low humidity. This can reduce oral dryness that happens during the night.
