Dry skin causes can varies across from person to person. Generally speaking, there are a few main causes which can often lead to a person having dry skin that is both irritating and unsightly.

These main causes of dry, itching skin could be due to varying reasons such as medication side effects, improper nutrition or smoking.

Sebaceous Glands

People usually prone to dry, itchy skin have sebaceous glands (the glands that excrete oil) that do not work properly, so the skin runs short on these secretions. These secretions are called sebum. So, if you have a dry skin sebum , that could be your main dry skin causes.

Hypothyroidism

If a doctor diagnoses you with an under active thyroid (a gland located in the neck, which are responsible for regulating the metabolic rate) called hypothyroidism, it could be another possible cause of your itchy skin. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones.

Diabetes

For those with diabetes, the body has to remove extra sugar from the blood. This process uses up the water in your body, causing your skin to dry out. Keeping your sugar level steady is the first step in overcoming any dry and itching skin associated with diabetes.

Skin Ailments

Skin ailments such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and seborrhea can also be the leading causes of itchy dry skin as well.Sometimes, the actual dry skin causes may not be so obvious. In such cases, it’s best to speak to your dermatologist to find out more.
