What is nummular dermatitis?

This type of dermatitis appears as a coined-shaped , itchy skin rash that affects both males and females of all ages. It may appear to be round to oval in shape. It presents itself on the skin as a scaly, bumpy mark that may be pink, red, or brown.

Some outbreaks of nummular dermatitis are very pronounced and noticeable while, other outbreaks can barely be seen. In later stages of the rash, the lesions may clear in the center, become scaly, or resemble ring worm or psoriasis. It is most common for the rash to fade and leave no signs behind.

Causes

The causes of nummular dermatitis are unknown but, is thought to occur, in some rare instances, by a medication allergy. Other outbreaks have been known to be caused by minor skin injuries or insect bites. nummular dermatitis a chronic condition, that may at times, get better and then get worse. It seems to show itself more in the winter when the skin can become dry and may affect any area of the body.

Coal tar may be added to the cortisone cream but, it stains and may cause a staph infections. Other treatments include the use of oral cortisone and also antibiotics. The use of ultraviolet light several times a week, for treatment of severe nummular dermatitis cases, is a choice for the patient, as well. Oral steroids can be used but, this is reserved for extreme cases.

Since nummular dermatitis is associated with dry skin, bathing more frequently may cause the condition to worsen. The use of soaps or other products, such as, laundry detergents (dryer sheets), and rough garments (wool), worsen the rash. Extreme hot and cold may also aggravate nummular dermatitis. It is recommended that bathing be reduced to a minimum during these outbreaks, usually reduced to once a day. The use of soap, in certain necessary areas of the body, are recommended. Showers and baths require the use of room temperature water and patting dry with a towel afterwards. Lubricating the skin after the shower is also recommended, as well as, 100% cotton clothing.

nummular dermatitis is a non-curable oval shaped rash that is aggravated by many factors. It may appear in many stages of colors and degrees. There are numerous ways to treat an outbreak such as the use of cortisone creams, antibiotics, oral cortisone, and ultraviolet light. Bathing once a day with soap only in areas as needed is recommended. Towel drying is reduced to pat dying and 100% cotton clothing is less irritating. Lubrication of the affected area may help with itching. Nnummular dermatitis may get worse if treatment is stopped, but it seems to always disappear without leaving a trace.
